Household & Consumer Products

Mica has been a constant in households since the 1800’s when it was first used in its raw form as mica heat plates for stoves and furnaces with thin panels serving as a viewing window. Over time it has become one of the go-to minerals for many appliances and consumer items due to its unique thermal and electrical properties and its mechanical properties, which allow it to be cut, punched, stamped, and machined to close tolerances.

Asheville Mica Company is also an excellent source for ceramic standoffs used to support nichrome heating elements in dishwashers, clothes dryers and conventional electric and convection ovens.

Use Cases

  • Heat Plates in Microwaves, Clystron Windows
  • Heater Plate for Toaster Element Cards
  • Heating Elements for Plastic Processing
  • Strip and Band Heaters
  • Terminal Insulation
  • Wood and Gas Stove Windows

Muscovite and Phlogopite

Muscovite and phlogopite splittings can be fabricated into various built-up mica products. Produced by mechanized or hand setting of overlapping splittings and alternate layers of binders and splittings, built-up mica is used primarily as an
electrical insulation material. Mica insulation is used in high-temperature and fire-resistant power cables in nuclear reactors and their generators and control wiring, aluminum plants, and blast furnaces.

Mica Tape Insulation

Mica tape insulation is employed in critical wiring circuits of defense systems, atomic energy plants, fire and security alarm systems, surveillance systems, heaters and boilers, lumber kilns, metal smelters, tanks and furnace wiring. Major products are bonded materials; flexible, heater, molding, and segment plates; rigid mica paper; and tape

We also offer Glass Tape as well as several other options - please contact our sales team to discuss your specific needs.

Rigid Sheet Mica

Rigid sheet mica is also widely used in household appliances and other products requiring an electrical heating element for rapid heat production and convective heat transfer.  This heating process involves wound nichrome wire. Mica sheet forms the rigid insulation plate for this wire. These appliances include items such as band heaters, irons, toasters, convection ovens and hairdryers.  Mica sheet is transparent to high frequency radio waves and is employed as a window in microwave ovens to protect the clystron from the moisture of the heated food products.
