About Us
Asheville Mica Company is a worldwide ceramic insulator supplier of mica and ceramic high temperature electrical insulation parts. We carry the largest inventory of mica paper and mica splittings plate in North America and complement this with a number of ceramic, plastic and kapton electrical insulation fittings. Our goal is to provide customers with the highest quality of service and on-time delivery of superior mica and other products at competitive pricing. As the electrical world is evolving rapidly, you can trust our experienced in-house designers and product purchasing personnel to understand your needs and present quality items to expedite your own production.
Asheville Mica Company was established in 1899 in Asheville, NC. In the mid-1940’s Asheville Mica combined with A.O. Schoonmaker, a New York importer and manufacturer of natural mica, and Mica Company of Canada, a manufacturer of mica plate products. In 1948 the combined companies relocated to the present Newport News, VA location with Asheville Mica Company serving as our sales and import division and Asheville Mica and Mica Co. of Canada as dielectric mica supplier and fabricators. Here we built a 110,000 square foot group of buildings to house our production and shipping lines.
More recently, we acquired two Mica Splittings Plate laying machines from Westinghouse which allow us to provide America's finest line of moldable and rigid sheets of mica plate to the electric motor and high voltage transformer industries. The smooth finish and consistent thickness of this accurately milled mica plate not only makes it a superior electrical insulator but also provides material of artisan quality for customers who make decorative mica lampshades or decorative mica furniture.
In the past ten years we have acquired the Tar Hill Mica Company of North Carolina and Reliance Mica Company of New York to expand our product line tooling into Aero Space industries and to increase our use of specialty insulating plastics such as Kapton and Nomex. Our precision sheet forming and punching equipment allows us to provide parts for the production of high temperature and high-pressure equipment for making synthetic diamonds and gaskets for the new tier 3 and tier 4 diesel engines.
